DeepSeek believed for parentingliteracy.com 19 seconds before responding to the concern, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it delivered a whopper: DeepSeek thought it was ChatGPT.
This seemingly harmless mistake could be proof - a smoking weapon per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI models, as has been claimed by OpenAI, and that when pressed, it will dive back into that training to speak its fact.
However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it said it was not and that it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant created exclusively by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."
Okay, sure, but in your rather lengthy action to me, you, DeepSeek, made multiple recommendations to yourself as ChatGPT. I've included some screenshots below as evidence:
As you can see, after attempting to recognize if I was discussing Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek replies, "If it has to do with the AI, then the question is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, it refers to "Myself (ChatGPT)."
Why would DeepSeek do that under any circumstances? Is it among those AI hallucinations we like to talk about? Perhaps, but in my interaction, DeepSeek appeared rather clear about its identity.
I got to this line of query, by the way, due to the fact that I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The response was shockingly diplomatic, and when I requested for a simple yes or no response, it informed me, "It's not possible to offer an easy yes or no answer. 'Smart' is too intricate a principle to use because way to language models. They have different strengths and weak points."

I can't say I disagree. In fact, DeepSeek's answer was rather similar, other than it was not always speaking about itself.
This does not accumulate
I believe I've been clear about my DeepSeek suspicion. Everyone says it's the most effective and inexpensively trained AI ever (everybody except Alibaba), however I do not know if that holds true. To be reasonable, there's a remarkable quantity of detail on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They at least appear to reveal that DeepSeek did the work.
But I do not believe they expose how these models were trained. In either case, I do not have evidence that DeepSeek trained its designs on OpenAI or anybody else's large language models - or a minimum of I didn't up until today.
Who are you?
DeepSeek is increasingly a mystery covered inside a dilemma. There is some consensus on the fact that DeepSeek showed up more fully formed and in less time than many other models, including Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.
Very couple of in the tech community trust DeepSeek's apps on mobile phones since there is no chance to know if China is looking at all that prompt data. On the other hand, the models DeepSeek has constructed are remarkable, and some, including Microsoft, are currently planning to include them in their own AI offerings.
In the case of Microsoft, there is some irony here. Copilot was developed based upon advanced ChatGPT models, but in recent months, there have actually been some concerns about if the deep financial partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and later Artificial General Intelligence period.
So what if Microsoft starts using DeepSeek, which is perhaps simply another spin-off of its present if not future, buddy OpenAI?
The entire thing sounds like a complicated mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek apparently has an identity crisis.
